There's much ado about Dan Brown's fictional novel The Da Vinci Code, now a major motion picture. The premise of the novel is the unholy conspiracy on the part of the Roman Catholic church, and all of Christendom by implication, to hide the "real" truth about the Christian church, that Jesus was merely a man, a married man at that, married to the one who is actually the Holy Grail, Mary Magdalene. Through their union Sarah came into the world, beginning the bloodline of Christ, maintained, and kept secret over the years, through the ever vigilant efforts of the Priory of Sion, a secret organization begun in 1099 AD, just for this purpose.
All of this makes for interesting fiction, but sadly, it also has a more insidious dimension, for Brown mixes truth with lies, a tactic Satan has used from the beginning. It was the deceiver who said, "You shall surely not die," though die Adam and Eve did. As one individual said about the book, "When you get to the dialogue at Teabing's mansion, you can almost hear the snake hiss," Dan Brown now serving as Satan's latest Judas in a long line of Judas'.
Here is the foundational problem with the book. Rather than being clearly fictional, the book seeks to present itself as "truthful" fiction, to be received as true and therefore worthy of faith. In fact, the very last scene in the book has the hero dropping to his knees in reverence to the di- vine feminine, Mary Magdalene, whose voice he thinks he hears coming down to him through the ages, saying, in essence, "Believe!, Believe!" When we believe a lie, as Adam and Eve did, we place ourselves under the wrath of God, in need of redemption, not the redemption suggested by the book through the divine goddess, but true redemption, received by faith, accomplished through the shedding of the blood of Jesus Christ. Here lies another great fault of the book: it seeks redemption apart from the work of Christ on the cross. But, without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins; there is no redemption. Dan Brown deceives us. Thankfully we have a sure Word to which we may turn for the truth about these matters, the living Word, Jesus Christ.
